#1- Bias in Cable News
In today's society it is extremely difficult to find a single reliable unbiased new source, that is why it is important to cross check multiple sources. Media bias has been around as long as "media" itself. As I always say "News is in the eye of the beholder." One place in which bias is generally apparent is cable television. The U.S. seems to be divided up into three main categories; Democrats, Republicans, and people who just want the truth. Many members of an "older demographic" choose whatever station is tailored to their political agenda and take it as the gospel truth. In this case two of the biggest draws are CNN (Democrats) and FOX.
Media Bias Chart.
The simple chart and link above does a fairly decent and objective job of letting people know where each news source stands. As you can see CNN and FOX both have opinion sections (the talk shows of sorts discussing news) that are at the far left and right of this respective list. In the last few years one thing that has become more prevalent is CNN and FOX becoming less about defined politics and more of a pro or anti Trump argument. I recall the vastly different responses to Donald Trump "fist pumping" before visiting a 9/11 memorial service. CNN blasted words like "blatantly disrespectful" and FOX hailed him as a patriotic and unwavering. In reality the truth was someplace in between.
Shots Fired Between Networks
This clip and article are a pretty accurate summary of the content both networks put out. It's honestly a tad shocking to see how much of a blatant disregard for other people's opinions that these stations seem to have. CNN has carried a snarky and arrogant tone for as long as I remember. In a similar way FOX often berates guests with opposing views to illicit negative responses like a schoolyard bully. For those of us with little to no political affiliation it's tiresome to watch either program and know that it's likely only half of a story. With today's younger generation we can learn the truth in just a few taps on a smartphone. Cable TV won't become outdated any time soon but it is clear to see that young people prefer other avenues of attaining news that they can easily fact check.
To get the full story it would be more helpful to look at American news from a more unbiased source like BBC News. A view from outside the U.S. allows a less politically inclined spin on the story. If you were bound and determined to find a U.S. based source then USA Today would be fairly objective (for the most part). It is intentionally branded to be a "middle market" news source.
According to this graph from statista FOX ia the "most trusted news source". Keep in mind much of this has to do with demographics and political alignment in relation to the population.
The only thing the stations have seemed to agree on lately was the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi. CNN's take on Kobe and his legacy was actually respectable. Fox's take was equally as touching. As a life long Kobe Bryant fan it did my heart good to see these two very different sides of the same coin do something good for once.
